Dance Concert Benefiting Camp Sweeney
Don’t miss a wonderful evening of dance for a great cause! The Dance Gallery, located in Round Rock Texas, is home to several award-winning dance teams made up of dancers ages 8-18. These dancers will be sharing their talent and love of dance to raise money for a wonderful cause – Camp Sweeney!
Camp Sweeney is a 3 week summer youth camp for children with Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a life threatening autoimmune disease in which the pancreas no longer produces insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Managing the disease is a constant struggle that involves monitoring your blood sugar, administering insulin through injections or an insulin pump and carefully balancing these doses with eating and physical exercise just to stay alive. Every day a Type 1 diabetic is fighting high and low blood sugar. Both of these can lead to unpleasant side effects at best and life threatening complications at worst. Long term complications can lead to kidney failure, heart attack and blindness. Camp Sweeney opened its doors to children with Type 1 diabetes in 1950. Today Camp Sweeney is the largest camp for children with diabetes and has served over 30,000 campers from 10 countries and 40 states over the past 70 years. Camp Sweeney is a life changing camp with top medical professionals that teach kids with this disease not only how to live with Type 1 diabetes, but how to thrive despite it! Camp Sweeney emphasizes perseverance, faith and courage with EVERY camper.
The Dance Gallery’s owner’s son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year. Her son was given a scholarship to attend Camp Sweeney last summer and his family can’t tell you how much it meant to them! The Dance Gallery would like to pay it forward and send other newly diagnosed children to camp.
